Our First Resident

Appleton Lodge’s first resident is John Riggs who joined The Army in 1939 just before the outbreak of WW2. John served in the Middle East before joining the Chindits – a special operations unit protecting British India from the Japanese Army.

During his service, John battled through monsoons and travelled up to 180 miles a month on foot. He returned from the war malnourished and with malaria.

John has lived on RBLI’s Village for many years, moving to Gavin Astor House following a stroke in 2018. John is a very determined man and made huge progress with his recovery. We are incredibly proud that WW2 veteran, John, is the first resident of Appleton Lodge.
